Lawren S. Harris Boxed Notecards
Schooled in French Impressionism and filled with national pride, a small community of artists came together in 1920 to form the Group of Seven, whose objective was to produce distinctly Canadian imagery. The impetus for this association was Lawren S. Harris (1885–1970), who firmly believed in the need for a national art movement.
Harris painted the Canadian landscape with enthusiasm, capturing the majesty of its wilderness and its inherent spirituality. The sublime quality of his works sets them apart from those of the other Group of Seven members. As Harris explained, painting nature was more than merely recording her seasons and trappings: “The artist moves slowly but surely through many transitions toward a deeper and more universal expression. From his particular love, and in the process of creating it, he is led inevitably to universal qualities and toward a universal vision and understanding.”
